- China Unicom will begin the deployment of its first-phase WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) network in another 229 cities, after the company kicked off WCDMA commercial trials in 55 cities in May 17, 2009, the Xinhua News reported on June 18. The network construction plan in 229 cities is slated for completion by year-end 2009. Meanwhile, Beijing Unicom, the subsidiary of China Unicom in Beijing, recently announced its plan to recruit more users to participate in the WCDMA commercial trials.

On June 12, Beijing Unicom began giving the 186-prefix phone numbers to the first batch of 500 users. The second batch of users is expected to have the 186-prefix phone numbers by July 10, 2009. To date, Beijing Unicom has a total of 100,000 users participating in the commercial trials. Beijing Unicom expects to accept applications for the 186-prefix phone number from the general public beginning from September 1, 2009, according to the same source.

- China Mobile and China Telecom recently began buying Wi-Fi (Wireless-Fidelity) mobile phones supporting WAPI (Wireless Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure), China's homegrown wireless standard, the Sina Tech News reported on June 18. Recently, China Telecom and China Mobile separately announced that they have begun inviting WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) equipment procurement bids and demanded all equipment to support both WAPI and Wi-Fi standards. China Mobile's WLAN bidding, which began in May 2009, has attracted nearly 40 companies to participate in the bidding. Furthermore, China Mobile is projected to deploy nearly 11,000 WLAN hot-spots.
